The national level programmes on RGAUD were organized in New
Delhi in 2004 and 2005. In 2006, the national-level programme on
RGAUD was organized in Nagpur on 20 August 2006. On this
occasion, MNRE organized a half marathon called the ‘run for
sun’. Over 5000 man and women took part in the Marathon. The
Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh flagged
off the marathon at the Kasturchand Park, Nagpur. The half
marathon of 21 km was open for all, and a 3-km marathon was
organized for senior citizens. Shri Angad of the Bengal
Engineering Group, Roorkee, and Vaishali Chatare of Central
Railways capped the moment with crowning glory as they raced to
triumph in the prestigious half marathon. The duo was awarded
Rs.50 000 each for their golden efforts by Shri Deshmukh and
union minister Shri Oscar Fernandes in the presence of union
minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Vilas Muttemwar and
Secretary, MNRE, Shri V Subramaniam.
As part of the event, an exhibition on solar water heaters the
new and renewable energy systems such as solar lights, solar
cookers, windmills, and biomass gasifiers was also organized at
the Kasturchand Park during August 20-22, 2006. It was
inaugurated by union minister Shri Oscar Fernandes.
Over 35 000 school children who attended the main function were
administrated Renewable Energy Pledge. Renewable Energy Floats
on solar, wind and biomass were taken through various roads of
Nagpur city for creating awareness. Speaking on the occasion,
Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh said that in Maharashtra, Renewable
Energy sources are being promoted extensively. State nodal
agencies in various states put in their best efforts to make the
events successful and there was whole-hearted participation by
students, teachers, and the general masses alike.
The renewable energy pledge was taken across the country by the
participants in programmes organized on the occasion of Rajiv
Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas.
